United had taken the lead in the 10th minute after Daniel James fired his third goal of the season home in some style when he found the top corner with a rasping drive.
The hosts improved after the break as United’s attacking threat waned and Jannik Vestergaard’s towering header was well-deserved when it arrived in the 58th minute.
Danso’s red card led to some late pressure from the Red Devils, but solid defending and smart goalkeeping from Angus Gunn ensured the score stayed level after 90 minutes on the south coast.
Man of the match
Danish centre-back Jannik Vestergaard scored his first ever Southampton goal to haul the Saints level against United this afternoon.
The 27-year-old climbed highest to nod home a hopeful Kevin Danso cross in the second-half, but Vestergaard can be equally delighted with his defensive contribution after a fine all-round performance today helped secure a point for the home side.
"It was a difficult decision between him and his defensive partner Bednarek, but I think the goalscorer Vestergaard just about gets the Man of the Match award from me today." - Martin Keown
